THE “WORLD WITHOUT MONEY” LESSON

The abstraction process needed to arrive to a believable solution for a world without money is fundamental in the learning path of a designer.

In every artistic or scientific method, the ability to foresee beyond a certain and measurable situation becomes the instrument that gives validity to ideas.

The skills of a designer don’t concern only creation of objects for contemporary scenarios. Best projects of our century came out from a careful observation of contemporary world, changed into a projection of needs in the future.

Losin’ contact with an abstract and futuristic dimension, the designer runs the risk to suggest ojects that will be outclassed, or nothing worse forgot, in a few time.

In fact we know that the needs of the human being are in constant evolution, and the designer must catch not the need, but the concept of the need, basing his object on a correct and theorical vision of this.

The world without money has been an useful exercise under this perspective, and it has granted us to analyze problems not directly connected with design, but with the process and the concept of design.

To estimate the social evolution isn’t an easy work, ant it has requested a deep and accurate research of current situation, in an economic and technogical level.

The next step has been translating in a practical way the concepts of the research. This is the crucial point of every creative process, and the risk are different. Many times the result is too far from the starting point, losing contact with the original idea, causing various communication problems.

Besides a world without money is surely a concept that for many people can be surprising and impossible. This can block the creative thoughts and rationality in the designin’ process.

But probably this is the real force of the world without money.

The designer is forced to make a research not only on a social level, but he also must adapt his thoughts, going beyond the first astonishment and eliminating unuseful barriers that can represent themselves also in other projects.

This has been assisted by presentations in class that help to recreate a professional environment, in which people have to face an audience ina serious way.

The world without money was not just a simple exercise, but a way to learn process, and understanding its possible changings in a real life project.

Orma is the dream of a little tree.

You can use just one, or enlarge your family and make your little tree grow.

Orma is the final answer to space and places.

Then we moved to a more specific shape, in which people can decide the dimension of every part. The real problem about this phase of Orma Evolution was the difficulty of shapes and internal structure. In a strange way, the project was still trapped inside the beginning idea and it was unable to evolve and reach a new state. I must be honest and admit that, in this part, we have learned a lot about immediate ideas and we trien to solve every problem, so it has been a very important part for growing up as organizated designers.

And then we arrived to an intermediate stand, gettin’ more “technical” and developing a tree-based shape, previous step to the final version.

Fundamentally chairs are based upon human bearings, that express different feelings adn moods. To create a unique and, at the same time, different kind of bearing, we looked to trees and sticks, which are natural chairs that create particular atmosphere and shapes.

TongToy is a first approach to IPhone applications. It’s alittle app designed to help parents in growing up a child with a perfect english knowledge. How many times have you asked yourself how to make possible that your child study english having fun? The answer is TongToy, a little trick where the kid play a game and learn basilar english words. The display shows a word with different images’ options in english, and the kid has to click on the right one, recognizing the link word – image.

A virtual teacher will follow the progress of the kid, loading them in a website in which you can enter and take a look to kid’s score. When he reaches an high score a new option will appear on the website, allowing the parent to charge 1 € on the Iphone of the kid.

In this way it’s possible to educate your son and let him have fun same time. TongToy is just a concept-based application, so you can tell us what you think, but it’s not possible to download or try it.

Arduino is one of the most exciting projects of the last years. Completely open source, Arduino is a physical computing device. To be more specific, a little motherboard that can be used as the core of a project. Arduino is able to load programs and instructions from his own programming software which is based upon the Wiring libraries, in order to make the coding much more simple. The revolution about Arduino is that it’s cheap and very very flexible. In fact, is a perfect device for designers who want to use it as a part of a complex system, for example in correlation with motion sensors. And it’s also open source! This means that you are able to modify your Arduino and to download also the technical design drawings.

First of all, sketches for an application designed to be a new resources in findin’ babies’ names. Let’s put you just want an inspiration for the name of your future child… grab your Iphone and use Baby Name App!

The app is divided in 4 big categories, as you can see by the flowcharts. Selectin’ every different kind of category you can filter the list of names and read it followin’ your personal desires for the baby’s name. You can also decide to put a specific name in a favourite list or in the black list.But, look at the complete flowchart to get the idea.

See how you can manage everything just using the main menu screen with simple icons and actions, without being bored with unuseful buttons or additional screen messages.

But that’s not all about flowcharts. Just to keep warm, we have taken other three apps (always coded by Yaniv Steiner) and write down the flowcharts in a simply and immediate way in order to give the idea of the app’s functioning.  The apps are: Mago G, which allow you to do magic tricks with your friends just using  cards and your Iphone; 8 Ball, a quick and friendly way to know what to do in every moment of your day, ask to the 8 Ball! Il percorso di un’applicazione

La creazione di un’ applicazione interattiva è frutto di varie tappe, ognuna delle quali costituisce argomento specifico e articolato. Fondamentale importanza riveste il flowchart, strumento logico che permette allo sviluppatore di ordinare e progettare azioni e funzioni dell’applicazione.
La grafica composta di frecce e diagrammi visualizza l’ordine di funzionamento delle parti  del  software, e struttura con ordine le idee relative all’interazione fra utente e applicazione, sviluppando la consequenzialità delle interfacce.
Nel nostro caso, il processo di apprendimento e creatività per la realizzazione del flowchart ha visto elementi fondamentali in intuitività e semplicità. Una mappa concettuale  dove pochi elementi costituissero percorsi riconoscibili anche per utenti non esperti di diagrammi di flusso. La grafica insegna inoltre che il flowchart non è rigido ripetersi di finestre e frecce ma  occasione per integrare il ragionamento su carta con elementi tipici del graphic design.
Tali lavori puramente stilistici e grafici costituiscono un progresso dal concept iniziale del diagramma e si inseriscono nel più ampio discorso della proprietà intellettuale.
Sforzi, ragionamenti e impegno sono al centro della creatività e costruiscono quel senso di appartenenza che il designer prova nei confronti del prodotto progettato. Norme e leggi tutelano la proprietà intellettuale e il diritto del progettista di poter costantemente affermare l’ originalità dell’ opera, ma non si deve mai dimenticare che per poter commercializzare il proprio prodotto bisogna essere in grado di distaccarsi dal senso di paterna protezione verso di esso, lasciando (ad esempio nel caso delle applicazioni per l’ Iphone) che una società più grande gestisca la vendita e soprattutto la possibilità di conoscenza della proprietà intellettuale per un vasto numero di persone.
Il progettista deve quindi poter elaborare un percorso di ragione e ispirazione che lo porterà al conseguimento di un obiettivo preciso. La costruzione e lo sviluppo teorico pratico dell’ applicazione si configurano perciò in tali termini: una volta vagliati nel dettaglio gli argomenti e i processi si passa alla messa a punto della grafica secondo lo scopo e il pubblico al quale si sta puntando. Un’ applicazione appositamente per bambini non potrà essere composta alla stessa maniera di una con contenuti adulti.
Dopo aver ultimato la parte visuale si passa alla realizzazione del codice di programmazione. Questo è formato da una serie di istruzioni che il computer elabora in modo da poter compilare un programma, e segue delle regole basate sul rapporto uomo macchina. In particolare l’ Xcode è  l’ impalcatura che sorregge l’ intero sistema software Apple. E’ un linguaggio difficilmente comprensibile ad un primo utilizzo, poiché pensato per sviluppatori con un discreto bagaglio di esperienza informatica. Si presenta come un elaborato insieme di finestre e gruppi nei quali è necessario operare al fine di poter compilare il software e si discosta totalmente dall’ Action Script di Flash, un potente strumento comprensibile anche ai neofiti, tanto da correggere e suggerire comandi al programmatore. E’ anche vero che l’ Xcode è un linguaggio per sviluppatori con il quale è possibile gestire software di enorme complessità mentre Flash è pensato per un utilizzo completamente diverso.
Nel bagaglio personale del designer il codice di programmazione costituisce un’ arma insostituibile: dalla presentazione di progetto fino ad arrivare alla realizzazione di un’ applicazione, il codice aiuta ad apprendere una filosofia di ordinamento logico che sviluppa l’elasticità mentale del designer. Ovviamente il designer non deve diventare un programmatore, ma deve apprendere il funzionamento del linguaggio di programmazione e intuirne le potenzialità, rivolgendosi successivamente ad esperti del settore che realizzeranno per lui il codice relativo all’applicazione, basandosi sulla grafica e sull’idea in questione.  Oggi come non mai le nuove tecnologie devono essere uno strumento che il progettista utilizza e sfrutta come vuole e con creatività, senza ricadere in un utilizzo sterile da puro programmatore.
Chiarite tali perplessità informatico – tecniche si arriva quasi alla fine del procedimento di messa a punto dell’applicazione: Apple. Bisognerà inviare l’applicazione alla grande multinazionale affinché valuti la possibilità di inserirla o meno nell’Apple Store, secondo regole che non danneggino la loro immagine e soprattutto i loro guadagni.
Infine,  qual’ è il vero protagonista di questo processo teorico pratico?
L’utente. Troppo spesso capita infatti che il designer non ponga al centro delle sue aspettative e ragionamenti (in  molti casi complicati e poco concludenti) il punto finale che dà senso al suo operare.
L’utente è un mistero che deve essere  rivelato nella sua complessità eliminando, grazie all’ interfaccia,  la superiorità intellettuale che intercorre spesso fra la dimensione del progetto e l’utilizzatore finale. Il prodotto che giunge nelle mani di un acquirente deve essere studiato in ogni minimo particolare, considerando che l’interfaccia è prodotto per un qualsiasi utente, e che questa semplice frase racchiude in sé il necessario bagaglio per la riuscita di un progetto.
Sfortunatamente, all’interno della dimensione progettuale e delle sue variabili, capita che trovino spazio poco edificanti e avvilenti espedienti come il plagio. Nient’ altro se non una violazione della altrui proprietà intellettuale, spogliata della propria appartenenza ed adattata senza ritegno per coprire evidenti lacune progettuali. Solitamente il plagio è utilizzato in maniera tanto ignobile quanto maldestra: sono numerosi i casi in cui l’autore originale si accorge di plagio da parte di terzi ed intenta una causa contro essi.
E’ necessaria a questo punto una distinzione.
Trarre ispirazione da un altrui progetto è tappa della formazione personale e del processo creativo, aiuta a focalizzare punti di basilare importanza che spesso caratterizzano lo stile del progettista. Altra cosa è copiare pari passo un progetto, svilendo lo sforzo e l’impegno di altri, ed avendo (non sempre per fortuna) più riscontro popolare e commerciale.
Ma il progettista esperto e rodato sa benissimo, trovandosi espropriato delle proprie idee, che essere copiati è motivo di vanto e conseguimento di un determinato status all’interno della comunità dei designer.
Status che lo ha portato ad essere imitato da suoi deludenti e aridi colleghi.

Here is a little preview of the comic, the result of a project by Stefano Nurra and Michela Anedda. It tries to create a sort of italian entertainment, which, we hope, will be supported and distributed by the Apple Store.
